The 43-country Union for the Mediterranean is proposing a plan that includes more than 100 projects aimed at developing solar energy in the Mediterranean region and potentially coordinating with U.S. solar programs in order to make the energy more competitive.  The objective of the Mediterranean Solar Plan is to produce 20 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2020, starting with 1 gigawatt the first year.  Currently, 130 projects, amounting to 10 gigawatts, have been submitted to the Mediterranean Solar Plan program secretariat by private and public sectors in the countries involved.  The projects are being reviewed, with some of them already deemed too weak to be retained.  Recently, representatives of the Mediterranean Solar Plan met with the manager of Department of Energy’s solar program in an attempt to find ways for the United States and the Mediterranean Solar Plan to cooperate.
